Based on a the true story, and set in the 1960s, Ford v Ferrari is about two friends who team up with Ford to defeat Ferrari at the Le Mans. The goal begins after Henry Ford II (Tracy Letts) fails to purchase the Italian company Ferrari, and is insulted by Enzo Ferrari (Remo Girone). After this setback, Ford decides to build his own race cars and defeat Enzo in a 24 hour endurance race at the Le Mans.
Lee Iacocca (Jon Bernthal), a Ford executive, seeks the help of Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon), a retired legend in the field who has won the Le Mans before. Shelby decides to enlist his hot-headed and straight talking friend, Ken Miles (Christian Bale). Together, these two work to build a racing car for Ford that can beat Ferrari.
Matt Damon and Christian Bale make for a superb combination and balance. Damon, the more leveled headed professional, working with the off the cuff Bale, have a chemistry that drives the film. The one liners and the racing are a driving force as well. The way the movie was filmed is an added plus.
Ford v Ferrari has received rave reviews for good reason. If you are not a racing fanatic or a “car man,” it’s ok. You will still be able to appreciate this movie and be entertained. The trailer does not give the movie justice. You have to go out and watch Ford v Ferrari, and you will understand what I mean. I recommend this film to be watched in the theater. With the action sequences and the sounds, it can only be truly appreciated there.
