Negotiations between Sony and Disney (owner of Marvel Studios) have broken down, and this is bad news for the MCU. Apparently, Disney had requested a larger share of the pie in future Spider-Man movies, but Sony was happy with extending the currently existing agreement between the two companies. The request by Disney may have been due to Spider-Man: Far from Home becoming Sony Pictures’ highest-grossing release of all time.
It is now likely that we will never see Tom Holland’s Spider-Man in another Marvel movie. This will leave a huge hole in the MCU, especially after joining the universe just a few years ago in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. For those of us who watched Far From Home, this latest news will clearly divert the path Marvel had made for Spidey. We saw the torch being passed down in the latest Spider-man movie. Marvel’s writers will have some work to do now.
There may still be a silver-lining in all of this. With Spidey coming back to Sony, this increases the chances of Spider-man meeting Tom Hardy’s Venom, or Jared Leto’s Morbius, which is currently in production. These possibilities could take Spider-man on a brand new path which may be just as exciting as the one he was on in the MCU. We will have to wait and see what Sony has up their sleeves.
Thankfully for Marvel, they didn’t announce any new Spider-man movies at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. It would have been devastating if they had. Maybe they knew something beforehand. Yet, with all of this news, maybe, just maybe, the two companies will reconsider their decision and give the fans what they want…more Spider-man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
