For anyone who enjoys action movies, having Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson or Jason Statham starring should guarantee a fair amount of good action sequences. Having them both together, is an action movie fan’s dream come true. Hobbs and Shaw delivers enough action to keep fans satisfied until the sequel. So before I give my critique of the movie, let’s run down a quick synopsis of the film.
Fast and Furious fans will recognize Johnson and Statham from the 2015 Furious 7 movie. These two clearly do not like each other and this antagonism continues into Hobbs and Shaw. Both are well trained agents for their governments. Hobbs is part of America’s Diplomatic Secret Service, while Shaw is a former British military elite operative, now considered an outlaw.
In Hobbs and Shaw the duo must team up to hunt down Shaw’s sister, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), who has been injected with a virus that in the wrong hands can destroy humanity. A genetically modified super villain, Brixton, played by Idris Elba pursues the trio throughout the movie. Brixton is an anarchist who wants the virus for maniacal reasons. Shaw’s sister, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), an M16 agent, has been a sworn enemy of her brother. This makes for an interesting family reunion.
If you want a movie that is full of action and laughs then you have found it here. The jabs the duo give each other throughout the movie are given with straight faces and believability. Yes, there are unrealistic scenes in the movie, and moments that border on stupidity. Even so, a hard core action fan as myself will highly enjoy this movie. Hobbs and Shaw has lived up to its hype, and only leaves us with one question – when is the next installment?
